AMUST Registry Cleaner Review
There are quite a number of registry cleaners nowadays each with its own unique key features. Obviously, all of these registry tools focus on a common purpose of detecting defective registry objects and fix them according to their own set of rules. Some delete them while others devised a more appropriate solution of correcting these errors. And while the process of deciding which software is best to buy falls on both the technical and subjective side still the question remains on which tool actually fixes the errors and which one offers more than what other software has. In order to be unique, many registry software developers throw in a few extras that are as significant as cleaning the registry itself.
One of these is AMUST Registry Cleaner which promises not only to fix errors on the Windows system registry but, allegedly, also cleans hard drives for unwanted files that clutter the system and oftentimes create adverse effect on the system performance. Let’s find out how this registry tool performs in action.
Feature Set [3.5/5]
The very first thing you’ll notice with AMUST Registry Cleaner is the software’s sleek professional design. Each feature is grouped together into buttons which refreshes the main display window and displays the controls for the selected functionality, which is a good first impression. Users can scan and correct invalid registry entries, create reports and undo recent changes made by the software, create full registry backups, compact the registry for faster and optimum performance, schedule registry scan, choose which entries to ignore during tests and modify system settings such as which drives to ignore and backup and restore paths. All in all, these features are considered typical for a Windows registry repair tool and in these areas AMUST Registry Cleaner performs above expectations.
What makes AMUST Registry Cleaner unique is the Disk Cleaner utility bundled with this software. Clicking the Disk Cleaner icon at the bottom menu launches a separate window which starts a disk scan for physical drives of your computer. The Disk Cleaner window actually mimics Windows Explorer’s look except that it displays graph icons of each folder that it scans. One thing you’ll immediately notice is that the scan is a bit slow and may sometimes cause your system to seem to hang for a second or two even on fast units with loads of RAM.
After the scanning is finally done, folders will be displayed with pie graphs indicating either the percent of disk space the folder consumes or the percentage of potential space to free up. However, we’re not sure what this really means and things just start to get really confusing from here. There seems to be no option on what to do with the folders it displays. Context menu for each folder just gives you an option to explore it, which can be done using the good old Windows Explorer. The File menu simply displays the drives available and the exit option which closes the Disk Cleaner utility. In other words, there’s no way to continue what so ever and you’ve just been left facing a blank wall. A big turnoff for a system utility with fairly good registry cleaning capability but with a non-functioning disk cleaner.
Ease of Installation [5/5]
Installation of this software is fairly simple and self-explanatory. No advanced technical knowledge is required and usually takes a minute to install. Installation file is a Windows executable application (EXE) with size of about 1.7Mb
Help/Support [4/5]
AMUST Registry Cleaner comes with a documentation manual which is immediately accessible from the top right part of the window. This opens up a regular help file where you can read about the many features of the software. However, the documentation pages are too short to be beneficial which usually consists of only 4 to 5 lines of texts and does not really give the readers enough information regarding the tool’s features and how each feature works. Although evaluation copy of the software does contain links on how to order and register, the software does not have any link on product inquiries or technical information. This is very important for a fact that software buyers tend to try products first then ask a lot of technical questions before purchasing. Help and contact information must be available immediately to them in order to attract potential buyers and ensure good sales turnout.
For those who are looking for their contact numbers, you can reach AMUST R&D Department by visiting their contact information page at http://www.amustsoft.com/company/contact.asp where you will find their complete company location, email address and even fax and phone numbers, a service other software companies don’t have.
Safety [5/5]
With regards to security, AMUST Registry Cleaner performs well, able to create a snapshot of the registry before each test so users can undo any changes made by the software anytime. Aside from this, it can also create full Windows registry backup which you can use to restore a good registry copy in case of corruption or accidental modifications ensuring the safety of your good registry copy.
Software Stability [4/5]
AMUST Registry Cleaner was tested and found to be stable both on low and high-end machines. Average memory usage is a bit high consuming. This may be due to the software’s interface design and how each form is structured. Scanning can be slow on some instances. At first you would think that the software runs on a multithreaded mode but in reality, it’s not. It simply updates each scanned areas status as it passes each entry giving the impression that multiple instances are scanning simultaneously.
Summary [4.3/5]
AMUST Registry Cleaner is a good product when it comes to registry error detection and correction. It also performs well in ensuring that the registry is safe by allowing users to create backup copies of their Windows registry. It has a good rollback feature that can be performed after each test. It can also safely compact the registry better than other registry tools we tested. In short words, as a registry repair and optimization tool, AMUST Registry Cleaner is really a good one.
The only major drawbacks of this registry software are the lack of documentation and a useless disk cleaning utility.
